Reflexology, also known as ‘zone therapy ’, is an ancient alternative form of therapy which focuses on applied pressure to mainly the feet but also hands and ears with the aim to relieve pain and stress, among various other health benefits. Considered to be a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), reflexology was founded on the ancient Chinese belief in qi (“chee”). This belief details how qi flows through every human and is vital for our overall wellbeing. Imbalances or blocked qi can cause illness, diseases, and various other conditions.
As an ancient practice, it is difficult to definitively track the origin of reflexology. A possible first recording of reflexology symbols date as far back as 2330 BC in the form of a pictograph found in the Egyptian tomb of Ankhamor. The Yellow Emperor’s ‘classic of internal medicine’ is a medical text written around 1000 BC which includes a chapter on examining feet, thought to be the earliest discussions in print regarding the relationship of life force, pressure points, organ function and areas on the feet.
Eunice Ingham, a renowned physiotherapist is one of the most prominent figures in the development and study of Reflexology. In the 1930’s she created and introduced the foot maps and charts still used today by reflexologists.
Different areas and pressure points in the feet, hands and ears are connected to various organs and other areas of the body. Not only does this form of therapy work as a guide or ‘window’ into ones current state of health, it also promotes wellness in all areas of the body. Reflexology offers many benefits.
